Making Healthy Eating a Lifelong Habit

Starting a new diet is easy: everyone wakes up on January 1st, has green salads, fresh chicken and healthy meals every day for two weeks, and loves it. However, old habits soon start to kick in, and one by one, they come crawling back and ruin all of your hard work.

However, it doesn’t need to be this way. You can change your diet as often as you wish, but until you change your mind-set and the way you think, nothing will last for long. Once you’ve achieved this way of thinking, healthy eating and a balanced lifestyle will follow.

Following crash diets and switching between the latest food fads can often do more harm than good in the long run. Your weight won’t be able to stabilise, and your body will hang onto fats in storage, as it will be too confused to know when or where the next intake of food will come.

Changing your habits may be hard, but it’s the best way to start if you’re determined to succeed.

Start Gradually

Don’t throw yourself in at the deep end: your body will take time to get accustomed to a new diet, and so will you! Put together a plan and gradually wean yourself off unhealthy foods. Do plenty of research into interesting diets, and foods high in nutrients and vitamins in order to help make cooking and eating an exciting part of the day.

The key to changing your perspective on food is to be passionate about it. If you discover why certain foods are bad for you, you might be put off from eating them ever again! Similarly, once you begin to reap the benefits from a healthy diet, you won’t want to turn back to your old habits.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up over Blips

It’s completely normal to have a few slip-ups: in fact, we’d be worried if you didn’t! Cravings are hard to beat, and while you’re still in the early stages, they’ll be ready to pop up at every opportunity.

If, and when, you do succumb, don’t beat yourself up! It’s only natural, and the guilt you feel afterwards is a great thing to hold onto for the next time you start craving something!

Talk to People

Even if you don’t have a supportive group of family and friends, there are plenty of people around the world who share similar beliefs and goals to you. Usually people at your gym or shoppers at your local fresh produce store will be happy to discuss matters that you’re concerned about, or provide you with support when you feel yourself wobbling.

Going online can be another way to connect with people in similar positions to you. Communities like eontu are filled with people happy to provide support and answer questions. There are many websites and blogs dedicated to people embarking on a lifetime of healthy eating: it’s just a matter of finding them.

Do Your Research

The more you investigate into healthy food, and explore the avenues it can take you down, the more likely you’ll be to stick with it over the long term. Cooking from scratch is a great hobby as well as the key to eating well, and once you begin to enjoy something, it won’t take long until you’re hooked – and then there’s no going back!

Sticking with healthy habits over a lifetime may sound daunting, but if you are open minded, and happy to learn, investigate, and recover from mistakes, you’ll be set up for many years into the future.
